Artificial intelligence is evolving at a rapid pace, with companies and societies constantly adopting its new applications. Machines are acquiring skills that feel distinctly human, such as reading emotions from a person’s face. AI is already being used for beneficial purposes—such as facilitating medical diagnostics—as well as for lethal applications in the arms industry. However, algorithms lack the capacity for ethical reflection, and errors can lurk within the code. As the societal role of machine learning grows, humanity faces critical decisions: where and how do we use this new resource, and who holds the power to decide? What kinds of decisions are we prepared to entrust to machines?
*Machina de Facto* was born from the artist’s desire to learn alongside the machine. New technologies are not a distant utopia; they are here among us right now. *Machina de Facto*, on display at Oodi, has taken on a concrete form. It is a tangible, heavy structure—a network made visible.
Marko Tandefelt of Kunstventures served as the producer of Rauhala’s work; Tatu Heinämäki handled the coding for Arilyn and Unity3D; and Eino Rauhala acted as the Ableton Live expert and Python programmer. The project was supported by AVEK Mediarata and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
