Open Call for Artists:
Media Cube in Central Library Oodi, workshop 16 – 23 October 2019 with exhibition 30 January – 1 March 2020 and 2 April – 3 May 2020

Media Cube is a media art project that brings together artists and a new kind of immersive platform, the Kuutio venue in the new Central Library Oodi in Helsinki. The focus in the project workshops and exhibitions will be on works that engage both the venue and the audience. All professional artists who are interested in immersive media art are eligible nationally, regardless of their specialisation or discipline.

The purpose of the project is to support and inspire artists who have an interest in immersive media art; to showcase the Kuutio space in Oodi as a venue for media art; and to establish performance practices for media art in the library context. Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the University of the Arts Helsinki’s specialisation programme in applied and participatory arts will also use to project to develop public programming practices for media art, in collaboration with Oodi.
The project is a collaborative effort by Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Central Library Oodi, University of the Arts Helsinki, and Artists’ Association MUU. It is coordinated by regional artist for artistic expertise Annika Dahlsten.
The workshops will be held at Central Library Oodi, from 16–18 October 2019 and from 21–23 October 2019. The workshops as well as any excursions and accommodation during them will be free for the selected artists. Two of the artworks envisaged in the workshops will be selected for implementation, and they will be presented in the Kuutio venue in February and April 2020. The artists responsible for the two works will each receive a fee of 2,000 euros. Audience workshops will be organised in conjunction with the presentation of the works.
The project workshops will be run and the exhibition curated by Helsinki-based media artists Jukka Hautamäki (b. 1971) and Marko Tandefelt (b. 1968).
Jukka Hautamäki’s works primarily with artificial intelligence, light, sound, electronics and moving image. He has given numerous workshops, courses and lectures in the field of sound and media art in Finland at Kiasma, Aalto University, Artists’ Association MUU, Art and Craft School Robotti, as well as internationally in Europe and North America. jukkahautamaki.com
Marko Tandefelt works as creative technologist and producer at production house Kunstventures. He has worked as curator at the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York, he has taught in Master’s Thesis courses at Parsons Design School MFA D+T in New York 2001–2016, and has supervised sound design degree projects at Aalto University. tandefelt.com
Additionally, regional artist for games as art Jaakko Kemppainen will introduce workshop participants to games as audiovisual artworks and the potential of the game format in media art.
Workshop participants will develop ideas for artworks and receive support for their implementation. The workshop will also explore the technical resources and demands of the Kuutio venue in Oodi. Teaching language in the workshop is Finnish, but also English can be used if necessary. Most of the teaching materials will be in Finnish.
Include in your application an account of your motivation for participating in the workshops and exhibitions (max. 1,500 characters). Also include seven items from your CV that support your application. You can also provide max. three links to work samples. No previously developed ideas are required to participate in the course, although plans and requirements can be discussed with the selected artists already before the workshops begin.
You can visit the Kuutio venue in Oodi on 23 August 2019 from 18:00–20:00. Regional artist Annika Dahlsten from Arts Promotion Centre Finland and director Timo Soppela from Artists’ Association MUU will be on hand to give further information about the project.
The application period will end on 31 August 2019 at 16:00.
The final selection of participants will be made by Jukka Hautamäki and Marko Tandefelt.
